Armchair BEA: Beyond the Blog

This post is part of my week-long participation in Armchair BEA 2012.

Beyond the Blog

When I was younger all I wanted to be was an author. And to be honest I'd still love to be an author. However at the moment I think I might be a better reader than I am a writer. We'll see what happens in the near future. I still love writing, but I want to stumble across a plot I fall in love with before I attempt to write fiction again.

As for monetizing, I've been thinking about doing some ads, but I don't really think I have the stats needed for it. I do have affiliate accounts with Book Depository and Amazon, but so far I haven't actually made enough to cash in on it. I'm definitely curious as to how other people monetize, because I think it can be great to use that income to supplement giveaways on the blog.

So since my non-blog writing is non-existent and I don't really have much else to share in that regard, here's a little bit more about me:

I am a crazy cat lady in training...
(Aww, look at them pretending they're innocent)

I like to bake...

I like to do crafty stuff, including cross stitch...
(I reallllly need to do a bigger, non-bookmark project again soon)

I have an obsession with castles...

And I really love nerdy shows and online fandoms...
(Including, but not limited to, Doctor Who, Firefly, Merlin, Sherlock, Fringe, Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, Friday Night Lights, Downton Abbey)

So how's that for a bit of randomness? Can't wait to see what everyone else has to share today. =)

  1. Your fur babies are sooo sweet!! My kids drag home strays... usually 2 or 3 at a time so I don't own anything without tons of cat hair.... I try to pass it off as Angora. :)

I haven't even done affiliates yet so you're ahead of me! :)

  2. Great post! I love TV shows, too ... I'm always trying to catch up on ALL the shows and it can be a little ridiculous.

And castles! I visited a castle last year when I was in Victoria, AB, but it wasn't nearly as big (not even close) as a REAL castle overseas. I would love to visit one someday! I also have a slight obsession with the Winchester Mansion in California, even though I've never been there.

I like to bake, too ... though I try not to do it too much since I also love to EAT baking!

    Have a good day!

    1. I went to a couple castles when I was in England, but none of the really impressive ones. I'd love to see some more.

  5. I am an affiliate too, but I don't ever really hope to make REAL money from it. But then again, it has never been my goal to make my blog my job.

    1. For sure, eh? I hear so much about monetization and tips and they're good, but I don't really care about that stuff too much.

  6. I've made very limited amounts of money from my Amazon affiliate links. I just started with google adsense and haven't made any money there. I don't ever expect to either, but it's kinda fun to pretend. In other words, I have no advice either, but that cheesecake looks DIVINE!

    1. Um YES the cheesecake was so good. Definitely one of the best I've made. The recipe is from here: http://www.melskitchencafe.com/2012/01/brownie-mosaic-cheesecake.html (though I made a few modifications with the toppings)

  7. Cats. Cats. CATS. GIMME THE CATS!

(I highly doubt you're further along in your crazy-cat-lady training than I am. I've got five and one of them is lounging in my lap while I type this.)

I tried cross-stitching once, but we learned very quickly that I am not to be around needles. One too many impaling my feet put an end to my sewing and cross-stitching adventures very quickly.

My greatest non-bookish interest is digital design. There's wire and circuitry in my family's blood; my dad is a technology wizard, my brother is trying for a networking degree, my mom is fairly computer-savvy herself, and I play with Photoshop.

Nice to meet you, fellow Ashley! (Our names are spelled different? Eh, who cares? My name is misspelled often enough that it doesn't matter. Not even my high school can spell it right on papers where it matters to spell it right.)

    1. I think if we had a bigger house I would definitely have more animals... but I gotta say I think 2 is a nice number.

Oh I love graphic design stuff, I wish I was better at it!

Well in that case I'm glad my name is spelt the normal way. My Mom actually wanted to spell it like your name, but my Dad said he would never be able to spell it. And as much as it's boring I am glad for the normal spelling since everyone assumes Ashley will be 'Ashley' rather than Ashlee, Ashleigh, etc.

  8. Beautiful cross stitch.

I would like to get to a point where monetizing brings in enough for me to give back too.

Oh and can I come over and fangirl with you? We like a ton of the same TV shows. David Tennant and Maggie Smith for the win.

  10. Your baking looks amazing. Now I'd like a snack. it seems that a lot of us would like to know what others are doing for montenizing.

  11. Awwww your kitties! So adorable.

We can never have enough bookmarks!

Your baking looks SO good. I'm in one of those chocolate craving moods. ;)

  12. I would love to find out how other people monotize as well. I was approved for blog ads but am still a little iffy about actually using it. I love your bookmarks, especially the one that says The End. It's so pretty and the fact it says something bookish just adds to the awesomeness.

    1. Thanks, I really like that one as well. =)

Agreed, I am curious about monetizing, I guess just not enough to do all the research for it since it's not really my goal in blogging, it would just be a nice perk.

  13. I didn't know that you liked Vampire Diaries too!!! :D Ian Somerhalder is the best. ;D

I liked that you shared a bit about yourself! Great idea! :D That thing you baked looks delicious, and those cross-stitched bookmarks are gorgeous! :D Also, castles are sweet! :D Yay for Sherlock, Merlin, Firefly, and Vampire Diaries...I still need to get into Downton Abbey and Doctor Who. ;) haha

Thanks for sharing a bit about yourself, Ashley! :D
