Synopsis: (from Goodreads)
Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I’d pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring…. until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something…unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon’s touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I’m getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don’t kill him first, that is.

My Thoughts:
‘Obsidian’ was a great read, mostly because of the cool alien concept. I haven’t read a lot of books with aliens, so it made it all the more unique. It had a very cool Roswell/I Am Number 4 feel to it, what with the aliens who have powers and enemies. Loved the concept. It was a bit meta reading about Katy, because she is a book blogger. This is a pretty cool shout-out that Jennifer Armentrout put in the book, yet I didn’t really think it added much to the plot. Not that you would want to read about someone updating their blog constantly, but I like it when characters have hobbies that are relevant to the overall book or that show up all the time, not just when the author remembers to mention it.

With everyone falling in love with this book, I think I have a little bit of a different opinion. I liked it, I did, but I didn’t fall in love. The main reason because of this is Daemon. Are we supposed to like him? I mean, his loyalty to his species is commendable, but the way he treats Katy is horrible. Thankfully Katy acknowledges this and doesn’t put up with much bull from him, but still... I can’t really get behind a relationship where the guy treats the girl like crap for most of the novel. Katy was an alright main character, but it felt like she did a lot of standing around while needing to be rescued, which was a bit irritating.

Is this worth a read? I’d say so. It was interesting and pretty well written. I enjoyed it, especially because the action/adventure aspect made it hard to put down. Not a favourite, but definitely enjoyable enough.

The Cover:
I like the concept, but that does not look at all like what you would expect from Katy.

Rating:
[3.5/5]

  1. Oh, it looks interesting but I don't really dig the cover. I kind of like the alien idea though!

  2. Sounds interesting.... I have to say though, that cover is throwing me off. I REALLY don't like it. And I know, "Don't judge a book by it's cover!" and all, but honestly, anyone who says they don't is lying.

  3. I couldn't agree more Ashley! I bought this one last week after reading tons of glowing reviews and expected to love it as much as I did Half-Blood, but I just couldn't quite get on board with Daemon. I like an antagonistic relationship, in fact I love them, but only when both characters are equally strong and stand their ground and neither is downright cruel. I wanted Katy to stand up to him a bit more and tell him his treatment of her was unacceptable. I don't know if the NetGalley version had the scenes from Daemon's POV in the back, but those made me feel much better about him, and I almost wish we had gotten a dual viewpoint all along so we could understand why he was the way he was a bit better. I still absolutely adore Jennifer Armentrout though, and will be picking up the next book in the series:)

Wow, that was a super long comment, sorry!

  4. Haha I agree Daemon has a terrible attitude but it made me laugh when he was being a jerk - I wouldn't laugh if I was Katie though I'd kick him in the balls. But I see where you wouldn't like it as much. I just took some and left some. :)

  5. I think it sounds super interesting, especially her being a blogger. I can see your point about updating it, not being the most fun part though. I don't like when a guy treats the girl like crap, but mainly stops at just being arrogant in that case. I'm really curious about what I'll think, 'cause I'm definitely picking it up in the near future! :) Great review.

  6. Hmmmm I don't recall if there were scenes from his POV, Jenny. I guess the thing is, I get why he was acting the way he did... it just took it too far, though. There were a few instances where it just took it to a level where I was like "really?? are we supposed to ignore THAT and just focus on their intense chemistry?" He needs to make some MAJOR amends before Katy should even consider speaking to him, let alone liking him. But, you know, I don't have a strong opinion at all. ;) And yay for long comments!

  7. I'm a bit stuck with this one. I think I"m only about 20% in and I don't want to give up but I really dislike the guy, Daemon. She's only just met him and he's SUCH a jerk (I'm sure there are reasons but still!). And his sister's a bit too eager-puppy at the moment...

  8. Great review! When I was reading the book summary just now I thought Daemon would be some sort of supernatural being but was not expecting him to be an alien.

  9. I've got both this one and Half-Blood in my TBR pile because of all the glowing reviews so I'm hoping Daemon isn't as much of an ass as you thought. It's one of the reasons I couldn't get into Becca Fitzpatrick's series - I wanted to kill Patch off. I don't understand this fascination that MC's have with guys that treat them like dirt.

  10. I think it's bearable... it won't stop you from liking the book, I don't think. But definitely enough, for me at least, to not completely fall for it.

  11. I honestly don't even know how to explain him. He runs hot and cold for the first part of the novel, but from the get go, he is unbelievably and undeniably sexy. And even while he's telling Katy she needs to stay away, everything else about him is like a giant magnet pulling Katy (AND ME!) to him. When he's first introduced, he's the biggest douche bag on the planet, and that never actually goes away, even right up to the last page. But he was HOT. I'm talking so hot that the sun is jealous of the heat he's putting out. And there is this one scene that just... oh my stars and comets, that was a good scene.
