I really loved Lisa & Laura's Liar Society books, and I was impressed by their use of strong heroines. I thought it would be fun for the authors to talk about the heroines they're inspired by. I love how they talked about their real life inspirations! Here they are:

Strong Heroines
by Lisa & Laura Roecker

We are kind of obsessed with strong heroines. Fictional heroines like Katniss are great, but we like the real life versions even better. We completely idolize women like Lena Dunham, Mindy Kaling, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

Lena is amazing. She writes, directs and produces her own television drama for HBO, oh and she wrote a memoir in her spare time. GIRLS is the single most compelling thing in television right now. Every episode pushes the envelope and tugs at my heart strings. She’s a genius.

Mindy Kaling is another woman who is absolutely nothing like the stereotypical, hot, female sitcom star. She’s better. She’s Indian. She appears to consume actual food on a semi-regular basis. She’s smart and funny and full of this crazy energy. She has a fresh perspective on what it means to be a woman and she’s completely unafraid to speak her mind. We love her.

And then there’s Tina and Amy. They should be running our country. Right? Ok, maybe not the country, but at least give them their own television network. Or at least a magazine. Something. I want to know these women. I want to hear what they have to say about our society, about women, about LIFE. They’re smart, they’re hilarious and they’re our heroes.

These women (and so many others) are the people who inspire us every single day. They make us want to be better writers. They make us want to be better women.

About the Authors:
Lisa and Laura Roecker are sisters-turned-writing partners with a passion for good books, pop culture, and Bravo programming. Not necessarily in that order. A prepubescent obsession with Lois Duncan and their mother's insistence that they read Men Are Just Desserts inspired This is WAR. The sisters live in Cleveland, Ohio, in separate residences. Their husbands wouldn't agree to a duplex. Cyberstalking is always encouraged at lisa-laura.blogspot.com and @landlroecker on Twitter.

  1. This book sounds really interesting, like a creepy thriller/mystery!

I also loved the guest post. YAY for real strong heroines. I love Amy and Tina, and I really need to check out Mindy Kaling's TV show and book, but from interviews I've seen she seems like a great, funny, feminist woman!!

Real life: I really admire women in Canadian politics right now, particularly Elizabeth May, the only federal MP of the Green Party because she is a power horse working endlessly and doesn't back down! Also Megan Leslie of the NDP.

Fictional: I absolutely love how Hermione was always so smart, saving the boys, and also empathizing with other creatures plight, and becoming an activist to make things better for the house elves!

  2. What a fun guest post! I'm a big fan of all of those comedians, and I especially love The Mindy Project. Since we share the same sense of humor I'm interested in checking out This is W.A.R. even more! Like the female empowerment angle of their books.
