Armchair BEA 2013: An Introduction

This post is part of my week-long participation in Armchair BEA 2013.

An Introduction

Welcome to Day 1 of Armchair BEA, everyone! Hello to both my regular visitors and to those of you new to Book Labyrinth. I can't believe it, but this is my 3rd year participating in Armchair BEA!! I always have a lot of fun finding new blogs and seeing what everyone else is chatting about.

Without further ado, here are the questions I chose to answer:

1. Please tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you? How long have you been blogging? Why did you get into blogging?
Hello! I'm Ashley, a 26 year old blogger from Ontario, Canada. I generally review YA, but I also delve into New Adult here on the blog. I've also been considering adding a few adult reviews here and there, as I've been reading a lot more non-teen books this year.

And here I'll crib from my own answer from last year: I've been blogging on Book Labyrinth since August of 2010 and writing reviews on Goodreads since January of that year. I started Book Labyrinth because I wanted a place where I could have bookish discussions with other people who enjoyed the same books as I did. What has kept me blogging is that connection with other book bloggers, because let's face it: no one else understands our book obsessions the way other bloggers do.

2. Where in the world are you blogging from? Tell a random fact or something special about your current location. Feel free to share pictures.
As mentioned, I'm from Ontario, Canada. To be more specific, Southwestern Ontario, basically equally distance from Port Huron, Michigan and Niagara Falls, New York. This means that despite all the Canadian stereptypes of igloos and the cold, I actually live in a place that's further south than about 1/3 of the States.

Something special about my location in regards to blogging is that I'm a couple hours from Toronto, which means that (when the timing works out) I get to attend a lot of great book events. There is also a large group of bloggers from the Toronto area, and it's been awesome to get to know them.

3. Have you previously participated in Armchair BEA? What brought you back for another year? If you have not previously participated, what drew you to the event?
Yes!! It's my 3rd year, as stated, which is pretty unbelievable. I think the greatest thing about Armchair BEA is the sense of community. We're all book lovers, and it's so cool to see all the responses to the great topics that the Armchair BEA team comes up with. I also love the Twitter parties and the chance for great prizes -- there's an exciting atmosphere throughout the whole event, which I think is great, considering a lot of people are sad they can't physically be at BEA.

4. What are you currently reading, or what is your favorite book you have read so far in 2013?
At the moment I'm reading "How I Lost You" by Janet Gurtler. She's a fellow Canadian who writes fabulous contemporary YA titles.

To name only one favourite book of the year is impossible, so I'll list a few. Despite owning The Host since it was published I never read it until the beginning of this year. Surprisingly I really adored it. Dark Triumph by Robin LaFevers was an amazing second volume to the 'His Fair Assassin' series. On a completely different note, Me Before You is a book that I can't stop thinking about. It's a tough and controversial read, but the emotions it evokes are crazy intense.

5. Which is your favorite post that you have written that you want everyone to read?
I was lucky enough to interview Marissa Meyer before her event in Toronto this march. I wrote about the event, and you can also listen to or read a transcript of the interview.

Then there was that time that Kelley Armstrong stopped by my house. (RIGHT??)

One post that I found interesting to write, and I think garnered some decent discussion was about favourite types of Book Swag.

Thanks for visiting, everyone! I can't wait to be introduced to all of you.

New Look on Book Labyrinth + Giveaway

If you've visited Book Labyrinth over the past couple of weeks you may have noticed that my blogspot address is officially redirecting to http://www.booklabyrinth.com. Yes, I officially have my own domain!! I've actually been wanting to use booklabyrinth.com for a LONG time, but first it was already taken, and then it was snatched up by one of those services who want to sell you a domain for a zillion dollars. So when I checked the availability again on a whim and found it available? You better believe I snatched it up.

If you've visited the blog over the past couple of days you may have noticed Book Labyrinth's all new look. It's still the same colour scheme, because I love the colours, but I've changed up the layout and header. I always want to keep the blog looking very simple -- clean lines and easy to navigate.

I've added a Links page with some of my favourite blogs, where I'm listed at, etc. I've also added anchor links to my Reviews page, so people can click on a letter at the top of the page and be brought directly to that letter. Giselle from Book Nerd has a great tutorial for that at The Newbie's Guide to Book Blogging: The HTML.

I'm not able to do giveaways very often, but I can right now, so what better way to celebrate Book Labyrinth's new design AND reward you guys for your awesome support??

You can see the prize details on the Rafflecopter below, but just to be clear -- there will be 4 winners. The first two chosen will each get $10 to spend at Book Depository (open internationally, where they ship for free). The next two winners will receive swag packs. One will be mostly bookmarks and whatever fits in a small envelope (open internationally), and the other I'll try to fill a bigger envelope, maybe with some buttons, etc (open US/Canada only).

So thank you for visiting, and for celebrating my new look with me. May the odds be ever in your favour. ;)

A post in which I am interviewed by Rachel

Usually the interviews we all post are questions we've asked someone else. Well, Rachel (from Beauty and the Bookshelf) and I are a bit different, okay? ;) As a collaborative guest post interview type of thingy (I'm all about the technical terms), Rachel has asked ME some questions about myself.

Keep in mind that I started answering these at about 12:30 in the morning after my birthday, so I might have been a wee bit giddy. Here it goes...

1. Describe yourself in the form of a haiku.

Canadian girl
Quiet and a bit unsure
Loves the written word

2. Using the letters of LABYRINTH, please describe your blog.

I can use the letters more than once, right? Because otherwise I give up. ;) Okay, I think I’ve got the perfect description: “A YA lit library”. I have to say I'm kind of high-fiving myself over how well that worked out.

3. Your blog is (obviously) called the Book Labyrinth. Is it because books get you lost in a maze, or because you love the movie? (Dance magic dance, anyone?)

Oh it’s both! Honestly I just wanted a really cool word that was a bit unique, and labyrinth kept sticking out in my mind. I love mazes/labyrinths, both visually and conceptually, and I figured it worked in an abstract way: that reading can make you feel lost in something magical. It also really describes the state of my room. =b But then there’s also the awesome movie angle. I haven’t watched it in years, actually, but it was definitely a favourite of mine when I was a kid.

(Image found here)

4. Why should people visit your blog? What makes it different from all the others?

I think at a certain point it’s not necessarily about uniqueness (although that helps), but it’s really about finding someone whose book tastes you either identify with or admire, and if you’re lucky, perhaps a bit of both.

Within YA I review a good range of genres, and you can always count on me to be honest with my reviews. After struggling with it a bit, I’m proud of the fact that I’m somewhat of a critical reader, and therefore when I give five stars you know that I absolutely loved the reading experience.

5. You're a tribute in the Reader Games! Which three fictional characters are your allies, and which are your enemies?

Eep, who or what are we fighting?! Well since I don’t know for sure I definitely need a girl who can physically kick butt. I’m going to go with the lesser known Kat -- Katsa (Graceling). She’s graced with survival, so I hope that she will let me into her inner circle and protect me too! Second I need someone else with some battle experience, but who is also super smart. It’s got to be Hermione Granger. She’s loyal, brave, and intelligent. Please be on my team, HG! And just in case this isn’t a physical fight, but one of cunning, wit, and overall awesomeness, then I’m going to need Frankie Landau-Banks (The Disreputable History of...) on my team.

Who are our enemies?! Good question. Well, I’m really interested in villains who are layered characters. Ones who are truly bad -- crazy evil and the like, but who also have moments where you can see a sliver of humanity. First off we have Mayor / President Prentiss (Chaos Walking). That guy gave me the shivers (in a bad way, obvs), and yet there are so many moments when you’re like “Omigosh, should I trust him?!” Second, if we’re having a conflicted and complex villain party then I’ve got to invite Warner (Shatter Me) for the eye candy. And then for someone who I really think is just pure evil, there’s Dolores Umbridge. I think I want to punch her even more than I want to punch Voldemort (please note I’ve never punched anyone in my life, so maybe Katsa will do it for me?).

6. Ebook or physical book? Why?

If I had to pick one format to read as it stands right now I think I would pick ebooks. My eReader is portable, I tend to read more quickly on it, and I have hand problems as well, so sometimes an eReader is so much easier to hold/handle. But honestly I love both formats. When it comes down to it I mostly still buy physical books, a lot because of the price, and also because they’re easier to loan. When it comes to book design, physical books will always win as well -- plus the ability to flip back and forth easily, and look things up in indexes more simply, etc. And if it comes to an apocalypse I don’t think I’ll be able to charge my Kobo, so physical books win out in that situation.

7. Favorite book? Least favorite book?

My favourite book is Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta. You can read my glowing review here. I've also posted about how I'm thankful for Jellicoe, and how I think it's beyond description. I love absolutely everything about that book, including the fact that I fell in love with it even more upon re-read.

As for least favourite... there have been a few that I really didn’t enjoy (you can check out my 'Read' shelf on Goodreads ordered by rating), but honestly I think 'Lord of the Flies' sticks out in my mind as a book from school that I really, really disliked.

8. Three fictional characters: you marry one, kill one, and be in a book with one. Who do you choose?

Ah! I have a lot of book crushes, but I’m like “I can’t marry him, he belongs to ____!” Like, I adore Jonah Griggs so much (hello, my iPhone is named Griggs), but so much of why I love him is because of how he loves Taylor. Welllllll (I’m totally channeling the Tenth Doctor with that), I could play 'eenie meenie miney mo' forever, so it's decided: I’m going to marry Poe/Jamie from the Secret Society Girl books. Bonus: he’s age appropriate! (PS. You must read those books - so fab!)

I’m... going to (get Katsa to) kill Leck, appropriately enough. After reading Bitterblue his atrocities are fresh in my mind, and it breaks my heart that he had the grace to control people the way he did.

To get to be in a book with just one character is hard after being on Team Awesome with those fine ladies (see: above), but... I pick Luna Lovegood. You can read more about why I love Luna here.

9. What do you hope to accomplish with your blog?

I think what I most want to accomplish is just to share my love of reading with others, and to continue to grow as part of the book blogging community. My specific goal is to hear back from people saying “I read this book because of your recommendation”. I’ve been fortunate enough to hear that a few times, which I think is amazing. There's really nothing better than hearing that people respect my reading tastes and feel that I have something valuable to share with them.

10. Five fun facts about you and/or your blog.

Hmm, alrighty... here are some random factoids:
  1. I purposely scheduled my first post on Book Labyrinth to coincide with the release of Mockingjay
  2. The very first movie I saw in theatres was Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, and I still consider it one of my favourites
  3. When I started blogging I really didn’t read the paranormal genre at all. It took a few really great series (based on recommendations from trusted bloggers!) for me to realize there were some awesome paranormals out there. I’ve actually had a huge post about this in the works for a long time -- maybe eventually I’ll actually finish writing it and post it for you
  4. I think my patronus would be a penguin (see: animal personality test)
  5. I'm left handed, but I do random things right handed. For instance, I play baseball left handed, but hockey and golf right handed.

Well, that was fun! Hope you learned some interesting things about me. =)

Random Stuff

So I seem to have not really scheduled posts for this week, but I kind of figured "oh well". We all need a break sometimes, right?

But I do like having posts, and I do like having discussions/random posts, even though I don't usually post a lot of them. So lack of scheduled posts = time for some randomness.

The Hunger Games movie
So good, am I right?? I mean, everyone under the sun is making whole posts about this, with far more awesome and coherent thoughts than I could share, so I won't say much, but... yah, just very good for the most part. I went with my Mom and we bought VIP so we could have reserved seats, and I'm gladddd because after we got out of the movie the lines for the next regular shows were INSANE.

Mirror, Mirror movie
I got to attend a pre-screening of this last Saturday morning and it was cute for the most part. It was family oriented/humour-filled, like the preview showed, but with enough action to keep things interesting. I didn't love it, but I did like it. It did, however, make me even more excited about Lily Collins as Clary. She's such a good actress, and I think she's perfect to pull off sweet and tough at the same time, and she's good in both romantic and action scenes.

Jellicoe Road
I'm re-reading Jellicoe Road right now and totally falling in love with it all over again. I've had it before where I loveddd a book and then re-reading it I was a bit disappointed, but with Jellicoe it is not the case at all. I guess there's a reason why I easily placed it in my top favourite books, if not favourite books ever, upon reading it for the first time. Yah. Just SO MUCH LOVE for this book.

Destiny's Fire Blog Tour

Trisha Wolfe's debut novel, Destiny's Fire, was released earlier this week! In celebration of that fact there's a great blog tour going on to promote the book. Here's a little bit more about it:

It’s the year 2040, and sixteen-year-old Dez Harkly is one of the last of her kind—part of a nearly extinct race of shape-shifters descended from guardians to the Egyptian pharaohs. Her home and her secret are threatened when the Council lowers the barrier, allowing the enemy race to enter the Shythe haven.

As the Narcolym airships approach, Dez and her friends rebel against their Council and secretly train for battle. Not only is Dez wary of war and her growing affection for her best friend Jace, but she fears the change her birthday will bring. When Dez’s newfound power rockets out of control, it’s a Narcolym who could change her fate… if she can trust him.

Dez’s guarded world crumbles when she discovers why the Narcos have really come to Haven Falls, and she's forced to choose between the race who raised her and the enemy she's feared her whole life.

Find more information about Trisha & Destiny's Fire:

Be sure to check out the other tour posts for reviews, guest posts, interviews, and giveaways. The grand prize consists of an Egyptian/steampunk necklace (see picture), a print copy of Destiny's Fire, a DF bookmark, and a signed bookplate.

A Book I'm Thankful For

I've been a reader since I was a little girl. To try and name all my favourites would be impossible. Even to try and figure out which book over the course of my whole life I'm most thankful for is a daunting task. I have some favourites I've loved since I was little (The Giver, A Wrinkle in Time, The Magician's Nephew), but when I think about a book I'm most thankful for my mind can't help but drift to a book I read earlier this year. This gorgeous book is entitled 'Jellicoe Road' (or 'On the Jellicoe Road', originally) by Melina Marchetta.

Just thinking of 'Jellicoe Road' makes me slightly giddy. There are very few books I feel passionate enough about to recommend them to everyone with no caveats, but this is one of them. Whenever someone mentions it I can't help but squee over it, and when I see positive reviews I get so excited that someone else has enjoyed it as much as I did. I feel a connection to 'Jellicoe Road'. I created a label here on the blog for my review of it called "beyond description," because that's what 'Jellicoe' is to me. I can go on and on about it, but when it comes down to it I can't even fully describe how much I adore it.

'Jellicoe' is heartbreaking and hopeful. It's simple and complex. It's confusing at times, but ultimately rewarding. Gorgeous, breathtaking, disjointed, poetic. It will make you laugh and make you cry. I don't know how Melina Marchetta writes so beautifully, but somehow she does. No other author makes me feel the way she does with her words.

I really can't think of a more beautiful book, and that is why 'Jellicoe Road' is a book that I'm thankful for. I really can't praise Melina Marchetta's writing enough.

You can read my review of 'Jellicoe Road' here.

And now in full confession time, I'm writing this post because I saw a contest on Beth Revis' blog.

Really, this is the ultimate way to enter a contest. It's an epic giveaway, so who wouldn't want to win the prize (open internationally, btw)? But it's also awesome to hear about all these books that are special to people, and I've really enjoyed reading the several posts I've seen about it in my Google Reader.

If you enter the contest or have just written about a book you're thankful for be sure and link me to it in the comments, because I'd love to check it out!

Irresistibly Sweet Blog Award

The Instructions:
1. Thank and link to the person who nominated you.
2. Share seven random facts about yourself.
3. Pass the award along to 15 deserving blog buddies.
4. Contact those buddies to congratulate them

Kathy from Read This Instead has very kindly passed on the 'Irresistibly Sweet Blog Award' to me. Thank you, Kathy!

7 Random Facts About Me

1. I'm an only child, but I always wished I had an older brother. Yahhh, it took me a while when I was little to realize that was impossible.

2. I have a hard time picking a favourite of anything, whether it be a book, musical artist, movie, etc.

3. When I was little I ran into my Dad on top of playground equipment and fell off and broke my arm. I kept saying "Daddy pushed me!" I wonder why my Mom didn't want me to say that at the hospital? ;) Oops...

4. When I was in high school for a while there I wanted to be a lawyer. I'm not sure why, since I don't exactly enjoy confrontation.

5. I hate making important decisions. An example: it took me months to actually start my blog because I couldn't decide on a name.

6. I have two favourite accessories. One is a bracelet that closes with a star charm, and I wear it every day -- my best friend has the same one. The other is a key necklace that my Mom bought me, and I got it because of 'Lock and Key' by Sarah Dessen.

7. I really, really hate winter in Ontario (bone-chilling cold), but I hate the summers too (INSANE humidity). So that kind of sucks, because our spring and fall seasons are insanely short.

***

So, there are my random facts. I always have the worst time coming up with stuff, but hopefully those are somewhat interesting?

As for passing on the awards, you guys know how it goes... I don't actually pass them on because I know a lot of people don't like to accept them, but I do like to give props to awesome bloggers. So, I'd like to mention some of the newer blogs that I've found over the past month or two:

- Cindy's Love of Books
- eclectic / eccentric
- One Librarian's Book Reviews
- The Reading Fever
- The Story Queen
- The Zealous Reader
- We Heart YA

New Layout!

I thought it was time for a change. What do you think?

I have to give mad props to my Mom's photoshop skills for helping me with the banner and teaching me a few tips and tricks. I hadn't used Photoshop for anything complicated in forever, and it's definitely a testament to her talent that the banner looks so pretty.

I also made a button, so if you'd like to link to Book Labyrinth, here it is. You can just copy and paste the code below:

Hope everyone has had a good weekend. To my fellow Canadians, Happy May 2-4! Yay for long weekends. =)

Stylish Blogger Award

Today I want to take the time to thank not just one person, but the two amazing people who thought of me last week and awarded me the Stylish Blogger Award. Many thanks go out to Aimee from A Book Dork & Sarah from Mistress of the Library. I still find it so cool that people check out my blog, let alone that they would recognize my blog as great.

The rules of this award are to share 7 things about yourself, and then pass the award on to bloggers you think are great, letting them know you've passed the award on to them. I know a lot of people get uptight about awards and the restraints of accepting them, so what I'm going to do is share the 7 things, and then just make a short list of some awesome blogs I think you should definitely check out.

7 Things About Me:

1. I'm left handed, even though neither of my parents are. I love being left handed, and for some reason I take great pride in it, even though it means that nearly everything in the world inconveniences me.

2. My grandparents on my Mom's side were born in Holland, and I LOVE Dutch candy and pastries. I desperately want to visit Holland and meet all my relatives there.

3. Before going into library school I can honestly say I didn't really know everything that a librarian does. I just knew I loved books/reading, and that I also enjoyed organization and research. Turns out the program was a perfect fit for me -- thank goodness.

4. I'm a huge history geek, but I prefer watching documentaries or listening to lectures about it. I've only picked up 1 or 2 non-fiction historical books since finishing my undergrad (specialization in history).

5. I discover more and more every time I meet a dog how much of a cat person I am. I like dogs, but I LOVE cats. They're so hilarious and snarky and condescending, and they just know how awesome they are. My Mom & I have two cats, Cinder & Tatum:

6. I think I read more YA now than I did when I was an actual teenager, possibly because I think the best YA has been coming out over the past 5 years. Sarah Dessen and Meg Cabot are two exceptions to this, as I've been reading them since high school.

7. Besides reading/blogging I don't really have many hobbies. I can cross stitch, and that's about it. I'm a total homebody, and I would rather just sit at home and watch way too much TV (Vampire Diaries tonight, anyone? I'm so there).

And now for the awesome bloggers. Here are just a few examples of the great blogs that I really enjoy reading:

Happy New Year!

Thank you so much to everyone who reads this blog, and especially to those of you who comment. I appreciate it more than you know! I'm so excited to have gained more than 100 followers over the past 5 months, and I look forward to Book Labyrinth growing even more in 2011 as I continue to discover other amazing blogs and bloggers.

I hope your New Years Eve was/is fabulous and fun, and I wish you all the best in 2011! This year to come will likely bring change for me, as I search for a librarian job and also work on some personal goals. If you're also making resolutions or just trying to embrace some coming changes, good luck!

Merry Christmas!

I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas!

I've been a little bit slack on the blog lately, but I think it will pick up again in the New Year. I have a few reviews ready, I just need to get around to posting them.

This has been an interesting, and in many ways good, year for me, and I'm so glad I decided to start blogging!

Again, Merry Christmas, and I hope your holidays are wonderful!

Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day

I'd like to take time away from book reviews and make a post about Remembrance Day. I specifically scheduled this post for 11 am, because it marks the ending of War War I on November 11, 1918.

Why celebrate Remembrance Day?
"We must remember. If we do not, the sacrifice of those one hundred thousand Canadian lives will be meaningless. They died for us, for their homes and families and friends, for a collection of traditions they cherished and a future they believed in; they died for Canada. The meaning of their sacrifice rests with our collective national consciousness; our future is their monument."

I'm a peace loving person. I don't generally believe in war. But our country would not be where it is today without the brave soldiers who have fought for Canada, and continue to do so. On a personal note, my grandparents might not be alive today if the Canadians hadn't liberated the Netherlands when they did. So please take a bit of time today, no matter where you are in the world, to remember those who have fallen for your country. Every day should be Remembrance Day, but today is an extra special time to think about freedom and sacrifice.

In Flanders Fields by John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Welcome!

Hi, and welcome to Book Labyrinth. I'm so happy to finally be posting on this blog, as it's something I've been dreaming up for a while. I've been working on content for the past few days, so I hope everything is working properly. Contact me if you see any errors or if links aren't working properly.

I decided to launch this blog on August 24th in order to celebrate the release of Mockingjay. If you're lucky enough to not be working today then perhaps you'll be spending your day like I will be, devouring Suzanne Collins' latest release to discover what happens to Katniss and the others in their fight against the Capitol.

I'll be posting some reviews shortly, and I also hope to connect to blog writers and readers through some features. Again, welcome to Book Labyrinth, and thanks for visiting!
