Sadie Hayes Interview & Giveaway

Please welcome author Sadie Hayes to Book Labyrinth today. She graciously answered my questions, and is also offering up a copy of The Start-Up for giveaway.

Interview:

If you had to describe the premise of The Start-Up in a tweet (140 characters or less), what would you say?

Greed, Entrepreneurship, College, Sex, Feminism, Technology, Family, Aspiration, Ambition.

What inspired you to write The Start-Up?

I've lived and worked in Silicon Valley for quite some time and been picking up stories along the way. I’ve always wanted to write them, but wasn’t ever sure exactly what the narrative thread would be or even what format to try (A novel? A screenplay? A series of tech-haikus?). So when my publisher (Backlit Fiction) approached me with the idea of a Gossip Girl-esque series set in Silicon Valley, I was immediately on board. I loved the idea of writing a female tech geek protagonist. That really excited me. As a woman, I've experienced both inspiration and discouragement in the business world, and The Start-Up would give me a chance to draw on that in my writing. Another element was that, though I've read lots of books about entrepreneurship, I’ve never felt that experience and world been fully captured. So now it was my turn to try. Finally, Silicon Valley continues to fascinate me as a setting. It’s a world that is both exotic and accessible—it’s the gold rush for the 21st century. The Start-Up was born!

Have you ever based a character off a real-life person?

I often borrow details from people I know personally or have worked with. But they’re really just starting points. Things get altered, added on or removed, backstories and anecdotes get swapped out or dramatized... eventually each character ends up being pretty different from whatever initial “real-life” inspiration there might have been. Still, it’s been great to have a lot of memorable characters and stories to draw upon.

How do you use social media to connect with readers? How important do you think this is?

I’ve been using Twitter, Facebook and Goodreads to connect with readers, as well as reaching out to bloggers (like you :)). It’s been really rewarding for me as a writer to be able to have such immediate contact with my readers and to hear their feedback. I think it is incredibly important to have an online presence, both for connecting with readers as well as gaining exposure.

I really love your book covers: what kind of process did you go through to have them created?

Thank you! I wish I could take the credit for them! I brainstormed with my publisher around concepts but a graphic artist did all the design. There were a couple rounds of, “Is she too pretty? Are his pores too big?” which were kind of hilarious, I felt like I was working at Cosmo…

What are 3 random facts about you that you’d like to share?

Christmas is my favorite holiday, I’m an excellent parallel parker, and I LOVE tacos.

When a college freshman's breakthrough software program catapults her into the limelight, she and her twin brother must navigate a treacherous world of money, power, and envy: Silicon Valley.

Introducing "Plot Hinge"

Last week I got an email from Josh Martin telling me about his new project. I thought "Plot Hinge" sounded so cool that I would share it with you as well. Here's more about it in Josh's own words --

Plot Hinge is a serial novel project in which the outcome of real-world events decide how weekly chapters unfold. At the end of each chapter the plot is left at a cliff hanger with the story able to go in a couple different directions.

I then tell the readers something like: "If it's a cloudy night in Toronto next Tuesday, then the guards won't spot Jimmy trying to escape. If it's a clear night, Jimmy will be spotted and brought back to prison." The following week's chapter is then written based on the outcome of that event.

So while it's a fictional story, the plot hinges on these real-world events outside our control. The prologue to the story is live now with the outcome of Groundhog Day determining how Chapter 1 unfolds. Weekly chapters begin Feb 2nd.

You can read the prologue entitled "Will's Worries" right here, and you can check out tons more about the project and the history of serial novels at the Plot Hinge site.

Everneath by Brodi Ashton

Release Date: January 24, 2012
Publisher: Harper Teen
Pages: 370
Series: Everneath
#1
Review Source: Netgalley

Synopsis: (from Goodreads)
Last spring, Nikki Beckett vanished, sucked into an underworld known as the Everneath, where immortals Feed on the emotions of despairing humans. Now she's returned- to her old life, her family, her friends- before being banished back to the underworld... this time forever.

She has six months before the Everneath comes to claim her, six months for good-byes she can't find the words for, six months to find redemption, if it exists.

Nikki longs to spend these months reconnecting with her boyfriend, Jack, the one person she loves more than anything. But there's a problem: Cole, the smoldering immortal who first enticed her to the Everneath, has followed Nikki to the mortal world. And he'll do whatever it takes to bring her back- this time as his queen.

As Nikki's time grows short and her relationships begin slipping from her grasp, she's forced to make the hardest decision of her life: find a way to cheat fate and remain on the Surface with Jack or return to the Everneath and become Cole's...

My Thoughts:
Sometimes when you have a narrative that flips back and forth between different times it can be confusing or hard to read, but thankfully that isn’t at all the case with ‘Everneath’. Of course it was a bit frustrating to not know all the back story and to have to work to find it out, but it was definitely in an “omigosh, I need to know!!!” type of way that kept me turning the pages.

Nikki is an interesting character. She’s hard to get a read on because she’s had all of her emotions sucked out of her, but I thought the way she was written was perfect. Her voice was engaging enough while also staying true to the experiences she had been through.

‘Everneath’ explores a really heartwrenching relationship between Nikki and Jack, and the book keeps you dying to know what will happen between them as you read on. I also love how even though there are two guys present in Nikki’s life it’s not a love triangle at all in the way you would expect.

Generally ‘Everneath’ really impressed me with with its fascinating use of different mythologies, most specifically the story of Persephone. The ending of the book was what I predicted, but getting to that point was incredibly twisty turny, and it left me wanting more.

The Cover:
I like it. Especially the smoke element.

Tempting Tuesdays (Week 4)

It's Week Four of the 'Some Girls Bite' read-along and I'm psyched to be taking part. The read-along is being hosted by Jenny, Tina, Rummanah, & Missie, and you can find out more details about the read-along by clicking on the banner above.

Here are the questions for Chapters 13 - 15 & Epilogue:

1. Chapter 13 opens with Merit describing her new job routine as House Sentinel. Considering that every job Cadogan House is important in helping to make the house run efficiently, which job do you think you'd like to have (guard, cook, social director, gardener, etc.) and why?

I would be a pretty useless guard, except possibly if vampirism really, REALLY increased my grace and badass-ery (like, by a zillion percent). I think a perfect job for me would be the Cadogan House librarian.

2. In the supernatural world of Chicagoland Vampires, politics seem to play an important role in the way the Houses are run. Now that you've been introduced to the Rogues, do you think it's better for vampires to be a part of a House or to live outside of one.

I think knowing what I know from reading all of the books to date I would just want to be a nice quiet rogue... except it would be ideal to be part of a small rogue family so that you have vampire companions without all the horrible drama and bureaucratic red tape that's associated with being a house vampire.

3. After Morgan openly asks to court Merit, she feels betrayed when Ethan commands her to accept for the show of alliance it could bring to Cadogan House. Do you think her reaction was warranted?

Um yes! How would you feel if this guy you have insane chemistry with forced you to date someone from a rival company just to keep relations between the two corporations at ease? It's so insulting to belittle Merit's role to a woman just using her sexual prowess instead of her intelligence, not to mention really hurtful/heartbreaking, because as Merit you would think Ethan has some kind of feelings for you, and then he pimps you out to another guy. Not so nice feeling. :/

4. When Ethan meets with the perpetrator of the murders, were you surprised to discover who it was? If you suspected someone, were your suspensions correct? What did you think of the perpetrator's motive?

Honestly I must say I was a bit surprised, but not entirely. I was more surprised with Amber's role in the whole thing, though. I was like "girlllll why would screw over Ethan when you could just..." Yah, I'll stop that rather crude thought there. =b No, but really, I'm like the worst person ever at figuring out whodunnit, so I wasn't entirely sure until the end. As for the motive, I don't know. It seemed a bit far-fetched and dramatic, but I guess it's silly to try and find a logical explanation behind someone who has no problem murdering people for their own agenda.

5. What was your favorite/least favorite parts of Some Girls Bite?

I really liked Merit and her strong sense of self. Whether you like or dislike her, I think you can agree that Merit is strong and knows what she wants and (for the most part) isn't afraid to go and get it. It was just a fun read where the vampires were different from other books/series I've read in the past. On the downside I felt some parts of it were too predictable and filled with tropes, and that some of the characters didn't really get a chance to be developed very well.

6. What do you think is coming up next for Merit, Sentinel of Cadogan House? Will you continue reading this series, and if so, what do you hope to see happen in the next book?

I actually did continue the series, and I've read all of them. I was curious about why so many people adored the series, and I was hoping the books would continue to get better. For the most part they did, and I definitely enjoyed reading them. For some reason this series didn't totally click with me, but I still liked them.

Hallowed by Cynthia Hand

Release Date: January 17, 2012
Publisher: Harper Teen
Pages: 416
Series: Unearthly
#2
Review Source: Netgalley

Synopsis: (from Goodreads)
For months part-angel Clara Gardner trained to face the raging forest fire from her visions and rescue the alluring and mysterious Christian Prescott from the blaze. But nothing could prepare her for the fateful decisions she would be forced to make that day, or the startling revelation that her purpose—the task she was put on earth to accomplish—is not as straightforward as she thought. Now, torn between her increasingly complicated feelings for Christian and her love for her boyfriend, Tucker, Clara struggles to make sense of what she was supposed to do the day of the fire. And, as she is drawn further into the world of part angels and the growing conflict between White Wings and Black Wings, Clara learns of the terrifying new reality that she must face: Someone close to her will die in a matter of months. With her future uncertain, the only thing Clara knows for sure is that the fire was just the beginning.

My Thoughts:
What can I say about this one?? Such a good (and incredibly emotional) follow up to ‘Unearthly’. ‘Hallowed’ gives readers a continued connection with the main characters as the love triangle amps up. This series deserves an award for one of the best love triangles ever, though. I love how the love triangle has a purpose to the story, and that both guys are worthy of Clara.

There were some shocking moments in ‘Hallowed’ and some heartbreaking ones as well. More details about the angel mythology are revealed, and Clara learns secrets about her family and about the past. This aspect was fascinating, as was the continued discussion about purpose. I liked how the idea of free will was brought up, and whether or not angel-bloods have choices.

Cynthia Hand’s flowing prose will have you holding your breath as you keep turning pages to see what will happen next. This is such a great series, and ‘Hallowed’ offers revelations that will make you look at events from ‘Unearthly’ in a completely different way. I never thought I would fall in love with an angel series, but these books have proved me wrong. An incredible second installment that will leave you wanting Book 3 pronto (!) in order to find out more about Clara and her purpose.

So pretty!

Tempting Tuesdays (Week 3)

It's Week Three of the 'Some Girls Bite' read-along and I'm psyched to be taking part. The read-along is being hosted by Jenny, Tina, Rummanah, & Missie, and you can find out more details about the read-along by clicking on the banner above.

Here are the questions for Chapters 9 - 12:

1. Catcher and Ethan share some personality traits. What makes Mallory, Merit, and even us readers attracted to these guys? Would you date/mate with someone like these guys in real life?

I think one main thing they have in common is confidence. Confidence is definitely sexy unless it goes too far over the line into arrogance. They also both seem strong willed and protective, but still willing to accept strong women into their lives. Those are definitely good qualities as well. Neither Catcher nor Ethan are my exact types, but I definitely see the appeal, especially in fiction.

2. In Chapter 9 we learn of another murder. Do you see any patterns with the previous murder and Merit's attack? Do you have any guesses as to who is responsible and the motive behind the murders?

Honestly I had no clue at this point who was killing people or why, but I thought it was creepy how all the victims basically looked like Merit. Definitely a connection there.

3. The commendation is my favorite moment in the book and a significant event in Merit's life. She has finally come to terms that she is a Cadogan vampire. Were you surprised at all that Merit resisted Ethan's call and that he made her a Sentinel? Do you think she'll do while in this position? Why or why not?

I was definitely surprised by her being made Sentinel. It made me wonder about Merit and what Ethan sees in her that will make her good for the job, considering how much she's fought being a vampire and being a part of Cadogan up until now. I wasn't surprised by Merit resisting... there's clearly something special about her as a vampire, which is perhaps part of what Ethan has seen. I'm assuming Merit will do well at whatever she sets her mind to.

4. Loyalty is a reoccurring theme throughout the book and much of this series. Why is it so important to Ethan that he needs Merit's allegiance? Is it solely a Master and sentinel thing or does it imply something else?

I think part of it is a Master/Sentinel thing, and a Master/Novitiate thing. The vampire house structure is so regimented, and there seems to be so much competition out there. Loyalty to your house and your Master seems to be so important, like one of the most important things you can do is serving your master loyally. And then there's the personal aspect between Merit and Ethan, too. I think he feels if he has Merit's loyalty then he also has her respect, because Merit doesn't do anything unless she feels like it's right.

5. If you had the opportunity to sit down with Ethan, Merit, Mallory, and Catcher for a bite to eat like in the beginning of Chapter 12, what questions would you ask them at this point of the story?

I think I would ask them questions unrelated to the story/plot... I'd ask Merit about her studies and what drew her to English Literature. I'd ask Ethan about his life and about all the changes he's seen, and whether he thinks he experienced them differently as a vampire than as the humans he lived alongside. And I'd probably ask Catcher and Mallory about magic... I'd especially ask Catcher about his past.

Synopsis: (from Goodreads)
Addy Davidson discovers God's unexpected plans for her life when a reality TV show turns her quiet existence on its head.

The orphaned daughter of missionaries, Addy is quite content to stay in the shadows and never draw attention to herself. But when she's selected for a reality TV show to try to become the President son's prom date-a show she didn't audition for-she's suddenly in America's spotlight.

The lights, the make-up, the competitions, and the blogs discussing every move she makes all make Addy incredibly uncomfortable. But through her time at The Mansion, Addy comes to realize that first impressions aren't always right, that hiding out may not be what God had planned for her life, and that her faith should affect everything she does. It may just be that her selection wasn't random at all and that she's on this show "for such a time as this."

My Thoughts:
This was a really cute clean read that I think would be especially good for younger teens. I think I would have enjoyed this one even more at the end of elementary school/beginning of high school, just because of the content and the message. It sounds strange to say this, but this is Christian fiction that is very Christian. It’s not that I didn’t agree in most places, it’s just that it felt very in your face, which isn’t something I’m used to.

As I side note I want to point out that the one part that I was really taken aback by was the journal of Addy’s mom from when she was starting out as a missionary. The tone of her journal seriously shocked me. It was full of such first world American Christian superiority and looking down on the indigenous people that it really rubbed me the wrong way. I should also point out that Addy’s mom was praying to understand these people and to try and give up her attitude, but I just didn’t think the way some things were phrased were necessarily at all. (This is such a minor part of the book I feel weird even bringing it up, except that it really stuck out to me).

Back to the main plot: I thought the competition aspect was super cute. I can’t see a First Son ever going on this type of show, but it was amusing and entertaining. I also really adored the innocent and sweet affection that grew between Addy and Jonathan as the competition went on. Overall this was really just a cute book (I know, I can’t stop saying 'cute'!). It was a bit saccharine overall and melodramatic at times, but mostly it was just a quick read that was strong enough to keep me reading until the end.

The Cover:
Kind of exactly what you would expect for this type of book, and I actually do mean that in a good way.

Darker Still by Leanna Renee Hieber

Release Date: November 8, 2011
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire
Pages: 317
Series: Magic Most Foul
#1
Review Source: For review from Raincoast

Synopsis: (from Goodreads)
I was obsessed.

It was as if he called to me, demanding I reach out and touch the brushstrokes of color swirled onto the canvas. It was the most exquisite portrait I'd ever seen--everything about Lord Denbury was unbelievable...utterly breathtaking and eerily lifelike.

There was a reason for that. Because despite what everyone said, Denbury never had committed suicide. He was alive. Trapped within his golden frame.

I've crossed over into his world within the painting, and I've seen what dreams haunt him. They haunt me too. He and I are inextricably linked--bound together to watch the darkness seeping through the gas-lit cobblestone streets of Manhattan. Unless I can free him soon, things will only get Darker Still.

My Thoughts:
I totally fell in love with the premise of this book from the moment I heard it. A curse, a soul trapped in a painting, and only one girl can communicate with the trapped lord? It sounded page turning and intriguing, but unfortunately it just... wasn’t. I liked the book well enough, as in I cared about the characters and I wanted to know what would happen, but I definitely wasn’t wholly invested.

I’m wondering if the diary format had something to do with how I felt about the book. I almost felt like I didn’t really get to know the outside characters that well because of it, and yet I also didn’t even feel like I knew Natalie, our main character, all that well either, because the diary gives such a straightforward account. And then there was the romance which just wasn’t all that exciting or believable. In the end I feel like this is one of those “okay” books that had an interesting plot but wasn’t engaging enough for me to remember the characters a week or so after reading it.

The Cover:
Doesn't especially intrigue me, but it's pretty.

Tempting Tuesdays (Week 2)

It's Week Two of the 'Some Girls Bite' read-along and I'm psyched to be taking part. The read-along is being hosted by Jenny, Tina, Rummanah, & Missie, and you can find out more details about the read-along by clicking on the banner above.

Here are the questions for Chapters 5 - 8:

1. In what is a make you blush, steamy scene in the book- Chapter 5 has Ethan and Merit sharing a few hot moments after Merit's hunger strikes...that is until Ethan becomes a total cad! What do you think of him so far? Strong, masterful vampire, conceited playboy.....lover boy in disguise?

Honestly I was like "are you fracking kidding me?!?!" (sorry, been watching a lot of Battlestar lately) ... it's like this whole vampire world with Masters and hierarchy is so hard for me to accept. I get the appeal of Ethan, and I feel like he's going to get much better in the future, but at this moment?? What a presumptuous so and so. But okay, upon further reflection I don't think he's a total jerk. I think his position, his long life, and him being ensconced as a Master in this crazy vampire world have skewed his perception. He really thinks what he's offering is an honour, instead of the horrible insult that it is to Merit.

2. Merit and Mallory begin some major training in these next few chapters, resulting in cool Katana Sword facts and Ninja moves. What is the most physically challenging or adrenaline fueled event/activity you have participated in?

Oh gosh. I have never ever been a sports or outdoor person, so I don't really have a lot of experiences to choose from. The one really cool thing I've done is gone whitewater rafting. It was so long ago, but I remember it being a lot of fun and a lot of work, with all the paddling you have to do when you're not in the rapids.

3. Mallory and Catcher have sparks so intense they almost fly off the page.....what do you think of this cozy couple? Did you like the insta-love between them? Do they add to the story?

Honestly, they kind of bore me. I like Catcher by himself, but the insta-love is kind of annoying. I believe in insta-connections, but insta-love? Not so much. And him suddenly being a constant presence was just kind of weird. I think both characters add to the story in different ways, but putting them together like that just seems like a convenient way to tie two important characters together.

4. Lets talk Bff's....Mallory is hands down a terrific friend to Merit, the girls relationship is real, down to earth and fun....not to mention hysterical. What is your favorite memory or favorite thing to do with your bff? Feel free to share pics!

Probably the coolest thing I've done with a friend is go to England together! But I have a lot of good memories with that same friend. We've written stories together, gone to concerts together.... just all kinds of cool stuff. In general when it comes to friends I'm really big on just hanging out together at home, like just talking or playing games (yes I am a huge board game nerd, and some video games too) and stuff like that.

5. Things are starting to heat up in the mystery department...the set up at Red, Morgan's flirty appearance.... Catchers vague answers......as correlation day gets closer for Merit do you think someone is out to get her...or maybe recruit her to another house? Or PS- feed her some more food...because goodnight this girl likes to eat!!!

I definitely think there is something big (conspiracy type of big) going on, and I feel like Merit is at the centre. I don't know who is out to get her, but I have a feeling they will keep trying to hurt her. As for why is Merit the catalyst? Totally not sure.

And re: Merit's love of food - so awesome! Considering all the shaming of food that goes on in a lot of books it's refreshing to hear about a heroine who loves to eat. Of course it's convenient that she can't gain an ounce from all that delicious food now that she's a vampire, but I suppose that's another story altogether. =b

Guest Post from Anthea Sharp:

Thanks, Ashley, for having me here at Book Labyrinth! My YA urban fantasy Feyland: The Dark Realm went on sale in the middle of December, and I’m excited to be here to share some of the story behind the book.

Feyland blends high-tech computer gaming with the Realm of Faerie. While I don’t have actual experience with the faeries, I am a gamer girl. From the early days of Zork, to World of Warcraft, I’ve spent time enjoying fantasy-based computer worlds. A couple years ago, I started thinking about the similarities between the experience of gaming and the tales of mortals who are transported to fairyland.

Both are fantastical experiences, full of magic and danger. Time is distorted, with mere minutes translating to hours passing in the outside world. Despite its dangers, mortals are fascinated by the lure of the magical realm, and pine for it—sometimes desperately—when back in the real world.

What if, in a near-future world, computer games immersed the player even more completely? And what if, somehow, a game became a portal to someplace even more fantastical—the Realm of Faerie? Those were the musings that planted the seed of Feyland in my mind, and the more I thought about it, the more fun I had imagining the story, and all the troubles my characters would face, both in-game and out.

The game of Feyland will feel familiar to anyone who has played a fantasy-based MMO—that is, until the magical elements appear and start skewing the game-play. My favorite part of writing the story was throwing all kinds of crazy curveballs at my hero and heroine. Just when they think they have things figured out, everything changes again. Not only is the game messing with them, they each have their own issues to sort out, plus an attraction that threatens to upset the delicate balance of their in-game alliance.

Even though there are a few inside references, the reader doesn’t have to be a gamer to enjoy the story—just a fan of adventure mixed with a bit of fantasy and a touch of romance.

I’d be delighted to answer any questions people have, and thanks again to Ashley for inviting me to guest post. Tell me about your favorite computer game in the comments and enter to win an e-book of Feyland!
