Synopsis: (from Goodreads)
Two years after her best friend was involved in a car accident that caused a traumatic brain injury, Lottie Anders is ready to start her freshman year of college. Ready to move on. Ready to start forgetting the night that ripped her life apart.

Her plans come to a screeching halt when not one, but both brothers responsible for the accident end up back in her life again.

Zack is cruel, selfish and constantly rubbing what happened to her friend in Lottie's face.

Zan is different. He listens to her awkward ramblings. He loves "To Kill a Mockingbird" as much as she does, and his dark eyes are irresistible. His words are few and far between, but when he does speak, she can't help but listen.

The trouble is, Zan was the driver in the accident, and now Lottie's discovered he lied to her about what happened that night. Now she must decide if trusting him again will lead to real forgiveness, or deeper heartache.

My Thoughts:
I enjoyed Chelsea M. Cameron’s ‘My Favorite Mistake’, so when I read the description for ‘Deeper We Fall’ I knew it would be one to pick up ASAP. I was glad to get a chance to review ‘Deeper We Fall’ and upon reading it I can confirm that I enjoyed the book and that I’ll gladly read more from Chelsea in the future.

What I liked most about ‘Deeper We Fall’ was the characters and how they related to one another. Our main character, Lottie, is definitely admirable for her strength and loyalty, and I enjoyed her adorable habit of rambling and saying whatever she was thinking. Lottie is very stubborn in the beginning of the book, sure she has all the facts about the accident which severely injured her friend. She slowly becomes more open minded as she realizes there might be some things she’s missing when it comes to Zan.

Zan, the second main character, is pretty broken. He’s definitely misunderstood and judged for his past, but as the reader you see that he’s pretty clearly hiding something about what happened two years ago. I really adored the fact that Zan had been crushing on Lottie for years and was so shy about it. (Authors take note: I would love to read about more shy boys rather than all the smooth-talking YA/NA love interests out there.) I felt like some of the aspects of Zan's past and his poetry quoting skills seemed a bit over the top, but overall he was an interesting character and a swoony love interest. I do wish there had been a few more transition scenes between Lottie hating Zan and not talking to him to suddenly accepting him and loving him, but I can’t deny the crazy chemistry between those two characters.

Since the characters really made the book for me, I have to mention how great the secondary characters were. I loved Lottie’s relationship with her twin brother, Will. They had such a real friendship, and it was fun to read about their “twindar”. There was also a whole group of friends that have just as large of personalities as the main characters, including Katie and Stryker who will star in their own book (‘Faster We Burn’) later this year.

This is one of those books that I can’t really analyze that deeply, but while reading it I was definitely swept up in the characters and their drama. 'Deeper We Fall' features a lot of common themes of the New Adult Romance genre -- tragic past, loss, misunderstood tattooed ‘bad boy’, the jerk playboy, etc... however I think Chelsea M. Cameron does a good job of layering her characters, making them interesting beyond the stereotypes. While ‘Deeper We Fall’ doesn’t hold up as a favourite of the genre, I can definitely say I enjoy this author’s writing overall.

  1. I just stumbled on this on GR the other day and thought it looked good. The characters sound really wonderful and your review makes me even more interested in reading it! You're right about shy guys in YA/NA- we don't see them too often.

  2. Sometimes you just can't go too deep--they're better to just read and not analyze! And good characters really can make or break a book.

    1. I totally agree, and that's why I find it hard to review books like this. I definitely liked it quite a bit, but once I try reviewing it I seem to find all the negatives instead of the good parts that made the reading experience enjoyable.
