Synopsis: (from Goodreads)
1. Never trust anyone.

2. Remember they are always searching.

3. Don’t get involved.

4. Keep your head down.

5. Don’t fall in love.

Five simple rules. Ariane Tucker has followed them since the night she escaped from the genetics lab where she was created, the result of combining human and extraterrestrial DNA. Ariane’s survival—and that of her adoptive father—depends on her ability to blend in among the full-blooded humans in a small Wisconsin town, to hide in plain sight at her high school from those who seek to recover their lost (and expensive) “project.”

But when a cruel prank at school goes awry, it puts her in the path of Zane Bradshaw, the police chief’s son and someone who sees too much. Someone who really sees her. After years of trying to be invisible, Ariane finds the attention frightening—and utterly intoxicating. Suddenly, nothing is simple anymore, especially not the rules…
My Thoughts:
An alien hybrid tackles high school and romance while trying to avoid capture by the genetics lab who created her. WHAT EVEN, how freaking cool does that concept sound?! I knew I had to read this book based on the synopsis, and the execution of it did not at all disappoint.

Ariane is such an interesting combination of alien and human. There are things about humans she doesn’t understand or relate to at all, and yet she has all these emotions that make her inherently human. She wants to fit in and yearns for real friendship and a life of fulfillment: all things she can’t have, because of the fact that she’s an escaped research project that the lab company desperately wants back.

Of course of all the rules Ariane has to follow, Rule #5 (“Don’t fall in love”) is the most dangerous, because it really contains all of them (see synopsis, above). It may just be the most difficult for Ariane to follow, as well. I think you can surmise from the synopsis that Ariane and Zane develop quite a connection, and I have to say that they are one of my new favourite couples. I loved their initial interactions, their “faux” relationship that so quickly became real, and just everything about them. They genuinely cared for and liked each other as individuals, and it was great to see these two people finding the acceptance and affection they so desperately needed. I think why I liked the relationship so much is because we get to see from both characters points of view, and therefore we understand both parties feelings and see how real they are.

‘The Rules’ is a great combination of character development, romance, every day high school antics (bitchy mean girl, parties, etc), and science fiction. There are action scenes, kissing scenes, secret labs, crazy twists that I didn’t see coming, and so much more. This book is a great start to a new series, and I’m absolutely looking forward to seeing where Stacey Kade takes us in the next book.

The Cover:
Interesting, especially with the eye detail -- freaky!

Rating:
[4/5]

  3. I like the way you described this book as a mix of character development, romance, etc. because I think that really captures why I liked it too. It wasn't any one thing so much as all the things.

    1. Aliens, I think, are becoming a big trend... it's nice to see ones come out early before we're inundated with similar titles.

  6. Sounds cool. Glad it didn't disappoint. This is my first hearing of this one. I'm going to add it to my TBR. I don't have a freaky alien list. Maybe this will be the next big thing :)
